Today, 30 years ago, South Africa’s Constitution was adopted. Often referred to as one of the most progressive of its kind in the world – in particular due to its protections of the rights of LGBTIQA+ persons – the country’s Constitution continues to be a beacon for human rights across the world. Despite it’s progressive nature, the rights protected under it are, in many ways, at odds with the lived realities of transgender and gender-diverse persons across South Africa. Produced and directed by Carl Collison (for Beyond the Margins), the documentary, ‘I Am She/Her‘, sees trans and gender-diverse persons living in various parts of South Africa reflect on their lived realities three decades since this landmark moment in the country’s history.
