Breaking Bread is the title under which Beyond the Margins will be producing and publishing audio documentaries offering unique perspectives into the lives of queer communities – and their allies – across Africa. In the first instalment, we look into Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act. The passing into law of this Act – as well as the preceding months of anti-queer rhetoric which swept through the country – saw a marked increase in the number of threats and attacks against the country’s LGBTQIA+ communities. Among this increase in human rights violations is extortion and abuse by police officers. In this episode of Breaking Bread, a young gay Ugandan man speaks of the physical abuse and extortion he was subjected to after meeting a man on the dating app, Grindr. The man was a policeman.
