The documentary, Tribe, by Pascale Neuschäfer, looks into the life of Nyasha, a lesbian migrant from Zimbabwe who creates an intricate network of aid for fellow LGBTQIA+ migrants in Cape Town. The film, which was nominated in the Best Documentary Short category at the 2023 South African Film and Television Awards, centres Nyasha’s story within the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic, as hard lockdowns impact migrants and refugees, who were also ineligible for government assistance. A celebration of differences, chosen family and the unfailing power of community, the film won the Best Micro Short award at the 2022 Merced Queer Film Festival (USA) and the Award of Merit at the 2022 Best Shorts Competition (USA).
