Yesterday, Africa and the rest of the world celebrated Africa Day. For the continent’s LGBTIQA+ persons and communities, however, the past few years have been particularly hard, with a rising tide of religious- and culturally-based queerphobia and repressive anti-queer laws sweeping through many countries, including Uganda, Namibia, Kenya and Ghana. In these religiously conservative environments, queerness is often said to be ‘unAfrican’. In this short film, put together by Carl Collison, Nana* a young Ghanaian traditional leader and queer rights activist, speaks of his organisation’s drive to remind Ghanaians – and Africa, by extension – of its more inclusive pre-colonial views on queerness.
